Lately I’m literally obsessed with polo shirts. I don’t know where this obsession comes from but of course I had to buy at least one and try figuring out different ways to wear it. I actually bought two, one long and the other short sleeved, both vintage so I don’t feel too guilty about it.
There’s no doubt that the “preppy style” has made a huge come back this season and if you add “tenniscore” to the equation, you probably know why these t-shirts are really popular right now. The risk when wearing this item is to look like you’re in a cheaper version of a Ralph Lauren campaign. So: how to wear the rugby/polo shirt in a cool way?
First, we need to say that it doesn’t necessarily need to be oversized, it can be fitted paired with wide leg jeans or a maxi skirt: it’s really up to you and how you feel comfortable.
Let’s start from the basics. Of course, you can never go wrong if you style your polo shirt with a denim. Maybe throw a leather jacket on to add a little contrast.
If you want the outfit to be a little more unexpected, try to wear a mini skirt instead of pants.
The perfect mix for those Spring days when the weather is warm but not warm enough to go sleeveless. I also like this other option here, thanks Aimee 🫶🏻.
As the Miu Miu S/S 2024 suggests, you can wear your polo shirt layered, possibly over a vichy or checked shirt. I think it’s a super nice idea to give a twist to a layered look and to try something new.
Another way to layer, is to wear a short-sleeved striped shirt over a long-sleeved polo shirt: they can be both plain or striped, with matching or contrast colours. You can really have fun with different combos.
Last but not least, I'd definitely wear a polo shirt with a maxi white skirt (inspo is Lacoste S/S 2020).
Where to buy a polo shirt?
My first suggestion is to look for it in vintage and second-hand shops, you can really find some rare gems. But, as always, if you prefer the “new”, here some links.
Mango, on sale
Ralph Lauren, of course.
Acne Studios, love the colours.
COS, minimal.
Urban Outfitters, a little bit more heavy weighted.
Lacoste, for colder weather.
Obey, for a cropped fit.
Carhartt, from the men’s department.
H&M, if you prefer it plain.
Ralph Lauren, again but different.
Hope this little post convinced you that you need a polo shirt in your wardrobe. But more importantly, I hope it helped if you already have one but don’t know how to wear it.
See you soon :)
